What are the 3 major sedimentary environments?
Sedimentary Environment
Environment of Deposition
A geographic setting where sediment is accumulating. Each site is characterized by a particular combination of geologic processes and environmental conditions.
Sand Dunes
Hills of sand consist of well-sorted sand grains deposited by the wind.
Caves
Are sites where calcium carbonate is deposited as dripstone. Develop when groundwater dissolves limestone
Tidal Flats
Shallow, often muddy, part of foreshore, which are covered and uncovered by the rise and fall of the tide
Lagoons
Area of relatively shallow, quiet water situated in a coastal environment and having access to the sea but separated from the open marine conditions by a barrier. The barrier may be either a sandbar, a barrier island or it may be a coral reef.
Tidal Flats and Lagoons
Are areas where fine clay particles or carbonate-rich muds accumulate
Beaches
Gently sloping coasts covered by sand or pebbles
Deep Marine Environment
Adjacent to the continental slope often contain material that was transported by dense underwater currents of suspended sediment. Each layer has coarser particles at the bottom and finer material on top.
Shallow Marine Environment
Are sites where sand, clay, and carbonate-rich muds are often deposited. Ripple marks caused by wave activity may be present.
Alluvial Fans
Fan-shaped deposits of course sediments dropped by streams flowing out of mountains
Swamps and Bogs
Are quiet-water environments where mud and decayed plant material accumulate.
Bogs
Is a wetland that accumulates peat as a deposit of dead plant materials - often mosses,
Swamp
A wetland ecosystem characterized by mineral soils with poor drainage and by plant life dominated by trees.
Streams
Any body of flowing water confined within a channel, regardless of size. Usually a natural flow of water that is smaller than a river
Coral Reefs
A ridge of rock in the sea formed by the growth and deposit of coral.
Lakes
A body of accumulated water that is surrounded by land it can be fresh water or salt water.
