The police are responsible for enforcing criminal law by investigating crimes, collecting evidence, arresting suspects and questioning them.

The CPS will advise police in their investigation about things like lines of inquiry as well as what evidence they need to collect so the CPS can build a case.

The CPS assess the evidence that the police submit and then decide whether to prosecute and what the charge will be.
