What is the theory of plate tectonics?
There are rigid plates on the surface of earth
What size plates can there be?
Major and small plates
How many major plates are there?
7
What plate types are there?
Oceanic and continental
How do we know where the plates are?
Different hazards (such as volcanoes and earthquakes) happen on/ around them
What causes the plates to move? (Original theory)
Rising heat from earths core meets the surface and spreads out either side, causing the plates to move (slab pull) - also known as convection currents
What causes the plates to move? (Modern theory)
Convection currents may be less effective than thought with the main cause being gravity. This is due to the size and mass of plates
