Cold War competition in Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East
During the Cold War, the U.S. and Soviet Union competed for global influence in Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East by supporting opposing factions, sponsoring coups, and offering military or economic aid to newly independent or developing nations. This fueled proxy wars, entrenched authoritarian regimes, and created intense instability as both superpowers fought for geopolitical advantage and resources.
Challenges to post-WWII conformity
Post-WWII conformity (1945–1960s) was challenged by marginalized groups fighting for civil rights, youth subcultures rejecting suburban norms, and intellectuals questioning consumerism. Key challenges included the Civil Rights Movement, the Beat Generation's literary rebellion, the emergence of rock 'n' roll, the second-wave feminist movement, and anti-war protests.
Women’s Rights Movement/Feminist Movement
The Women’s Rights and Feminist Movement is a global, multi-wave effort advocating for social, political, and economic equality for women, originating in the mid-19th century. Key victories include women's suffrage (19th Amendment, 1920), reproductive rights (Roe v. Wade, 1973), and educational equity (Title IX, 1972).
Gay/Lesbian Rights Movement
The gay/lesbian rights movement is a long-standing struggle for equality, advocating for LGBTQ+ individuals' legal rights, safety, and social acceptance. Originating from post-WWII activism, the movement gained significant momentum following the 1969 Stonewall riots, shifting toward active resistance against discrimination in housing, employment, and law, culminating in major milestones like marriage equality.
Latino Rights Movement
The Latino Rights Movement is a long-standing struggle for equality, civil rights, and social justice in the U.S., intensifying in the 1960s with the Chicano Movement. Key efforts focus on ending segregation, improving labor conditions for farmworkers, securing voting rights, and promoting educational equity, often led by figures like Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta.
Asian Rights Movement
The Asian American movement is a social and political effort, emerging in the 1960s, aimed at securing rights, representation, and anti-racist action for diverse Asian ethnic groups in the U.S.. Inspired by the Black Power and anti-war movements, it united groups against discrimination, creating a pan-Asian identity to fight systemic racism and promote ethnic studies.
Native American Rights Movement
The Native American rights movement, peaking in the 1960s and 70s, fought for sovereignty, treaty rights, and against federal "termination" policies. Led by groups like the American Indian Movement (AIM), activists used direct action, including the 1969 Alcatraz occupation, to challenge systemic discrimination, high poverty, and police brutality.
Vietnam War/Debates about Vietnam
The Vietnam War (1955–1975) was a divisive Cold War conflict pitting North Vietnam (supported by communist allies) against South Vietnam (supported by the US and allies), fought over communist expansion and national unity. Debates centered on its moral justification, the validity of the "domino theory," the brutality of tactics (e.g., napalm), and the legality of the intervention.
Environmental movement
The environmental movement is a diverse, global effort comprising grassroots activism, conservationism, and political advocacy aimed at protecting natural resources, curbing pollution, and fighting climate change. Emerging from early 20th-century conservationism, it gained mainstream momentum with the first Earth Day in 1970. Key goals include sustainability, environmental justice, and transitioning from fossil fuels to renewables.
Internet
The internet’s arrival in the 1990s—driven by the World Wide Web (1990) and browsers like Mosaic (1993)—immediately revolutionized communication and information access, evolving from a research tool into a global platform. It democratized knowledge, enabled instant digital communication, fueled early e-commerce, and shifted reliance from physical media like libraries and newspapers to digital, user-friendly, and often free online resources.
Climate change
Characterized by an accelerated rise in global temperatures, particularly from the 1970s onwards, driven heavily by human-caused greenhouse gas emissions. This period saw a transition from relatively stable temperatures to rapid warming, surpassing natural variability and causing significant environmental impacts like rising sea levels, ocean heat increase, and more frequent, severe droughts.
