Metric System
based on the number 10 (a unit based system). This number system is used throughout the world (except in the United States).
What is linear length?
measuring lines, such as length, distance, width, depth, diameter, circumference, or arm span
How do you measure linear length?
using a meter stick, yard stick, ruler, or tape measure
What are the metric units for linear length?
mm, cm, m, km, or dm
(millimeters, centimeters, meters, kilometers, or decimeters)
What are the standard units for linear length?
in, ft, yds, miles
(inches, feet, yards, miles)
Temperature
a measure of how hot or cold something is.
Thermometer
an instrument used to measure temperature.
What is mass?
the amount of matter in an object. Mass of an object stays the same in all places.
What metric units are used to measure mass?
g, mg, kg
(grams, milligrams, or kilograms)
How do you measure the mass of an object?
using a triple beam balance
What is liquid capacity?
how much a liquid a container holds- the space inside a container
How do you measure liquid capacity?
using measuring cups or a graduated cylinder
What metric units are used for liquid capacity?
ml or L (milliliters or liters)
What is time?
duration of an event
Scientists use the metric system because it is ____________ to write and understand.
easier
What measures time?
a clock or stopwatch
What units are used for time?
seconds, minutes, and hours
What are the units for temperature?
Temperature is measured in degrees in Celsius (metric system) or Fahrenheit (standard system).
What standard units are used to measure mass?
ozs (ounces), lbs (pounds), or tons
What is density?
how tightly-packed the atoms are in an object (thickness)
How do you measure density?
d= m/v
(density= mass divided by volume)
What metric units are used to measure density?
g/cm³ (grams per centimeters cubed)
What is weight?
It is how strongly gravity pulls on that matter.
It is measured in Newtons using a spring scale.
Does one's weight change if they traveled to the moon?
Yes, since there is a less gravitational pull on the moon, a person's weight would change.
Does one's mass change if they traveled to the moon?
No, a person's mass does not change.
What tools are used to measure density?
-Triple beam balance (to measure the mass
-Graduated cylinder (to measure volume)
-Calculator (to calculate mass/volume)
-Hydrometer
What is volume of regular objects (cube)?
the amount of space taken up a regular 3-D object
How do you measure the volume of a cube?
V= l x w x h
Volume is measured by multiplying length times width times height
What are the metric units for the volume of a cube?
cm^3 (cm cubed), m^3 (meters cubed)
What are the standard units for the volume of cube?
in³ (inches cubed), ft³ (feet cubed)
What is volume of irregular objects?
the amount of space taken up by an irregular 3-D object.
*when an object is irregular, it's length, width, and height cannot be measured with a ruler/meter stick (like a rock)
What method is used to measure the volume of irregular objects?
water displacement
What tools do you use for water displacement?
a graduated cylinder and spill can
What metric units do you use for the volume of irregular objects?
ml and L (milliliters and liters)
