Sagittal Plane
A vertical plane that divides the body into left and right parts. An example is how a cut from head to toe would separate the body into two symmetrical halves (not necessarily equal parts)
Midsagittal (median) Plane
A vertical plane that divides the body into equal left and right halves. An example is a cut that runs directly down the center of the body, separating it into two identical parts.
Parasagittal Plane
A vertical plane that divides the body into unequal left and right parts. example is a cut that is parallel to the midsagittal plane, offset to one side.
Coronal Plane
A vertical plane that divides the body into anterior (front) and posterior (back) parts. An example is the section through the body that separates the face from the back. (Frontal Plane)
Transverse Plane
A horizontal plane that divides the body into superior (upper) and inferior (lower) parts. An example is a cross-section of the abdomen.
Oblique Plane
A plane that divides the body at an angle, producing a cut that is neither vertical nor horizontal. An example is a diagonal section through the body that separates different anatomical structures.
