Socialisation
The process by which we learn norms and values
Primary socialisation
Socialisation which occurs in the home and family
Secondary socialisation
Socialisation which occurs outside the home and in other institutions, eg. School
Norms
Expected and socially accepted behaviour
Values
Beliefs about what is right and wrong and what is important in society
Culture
Shared way of life of a society including shared norms and values, language, beliefs and practices
Identity
Who we are and how we see ourselves
Social control
Refers to the ways in which society ensures that everyone follows the same norms and values
Formal social control
Refers to official organisations who implement official sanctions, eg. Police, the government
Informal social control
Is unofficial, eg. The media, parents
Positive sanctions
Rewards to the right behaviour
Negative sanctions
Punishments for the wrong behaviour
Agencies of social control
The organisations and individuals who administer social control, eg. Police, school
