War hero; 2nd biggest military hero to Washington; had supporters pass Tariff of 1828; 61 at president; terrible shape; invited tons of people to his inauguration; part of Scot’s Irish; was taken prisoner at 13 and almost starved; orphaned at 15; founded Democratic party.

Henry Clay

War hawk from Kentucky; oversaw the election of 1824; rumors that he campaigned for Adams in the house; secretary of state for John Quincey Adams; represented the west for the Whigs; “the great pacifier.”

John C Calhoun

War hawk from South Carolina; represented the south for the Whigs; vice president for Andrew Jackson; resigned over these tariffs and started to lead the nullification process.

Black Hawk

Led the Sauk and Fox Indians in resisting their removal from their land; sought refuge with Winabegos and sold out; sentenced to one year in federal prison and sent to Iowa.

Osceola

Led the Seminole tribe and resisted and retreated into the Everglades; used guerrilla warfare for 7 years; came out when the Americans held up the white flag and was arrested when he came out.
