Neurogenesis
The formation of new neurons.
Neuroplasticity
The brain's ability to adapt and reorganize after learning or damage.
Corpus Callosum
A large band of neural fibers connecting the two brain hemispheres and carrying messages between them.
Split Brain
A condition resulting from surgery that separates the brain's two hemispheres by cutting the fibers of the corpus callosum.
Lateralization
The specialization of functions in each hemisphere of the brain.
Left Hemisphere Functions
Responsible for language processing, logical reasoning, and mathematical processing.
Right Hemisphere Functions
Responsible for facial recognition, spatial reasoning, and creative writing.
Clinical Application of Split Brain
Used for extreme cases of seizure disorders to prevent communication between the two hemispheres.
Gazzaniga's Finding
Found that the left hemisphere is primarily responsible for speech.
Facial Recognition
A function predominantly handled by the right hemisphere.
