Direct Characterization
the author tells the reader a character’s traits by describing them directly. For example, Mrs. Crawford is wearing a pink shirt or the character has a temper.
Indirect Characterization
the author show the reader a character’s traits, and the reader has to make an inference about the character.
Thematic Topic
one word to describe the lesson of story (ex: courage)
Complex Literary Theme
A full sentence that summarizes the lesson of story. It has to be a complex idea, somewhat applicable to life and literature, and avoid using “second person pronouns.” Takes the thematic topic and expands it.
Monologue
a speech given on stage to other characters or the audience
Soliloquy
a speech given on stage in which a character does not intend to be heard.
Aside
when the character “breaks the fourth wall” between play and audience
Iambic Pentameter
Shakespeare’s poetic structure. There are 10 syllables in every line with an unstressed and stressed syllable.
Dramatic Irony
When the audience knows something that the characters do not.
Juxtaposition
Two opposite ideas or words near one another to create an effect. A contradiction that enhances the meaning of a text
