Muscle Tissues
The types of tissues that make up muscles, which transform chemical energy into mechanical energy.
Myo, mys, sarco
Prefixes used referring to muscle. For example, sarcoplasm refers to the cytoplasm of a muscle cell.
Origin
The attachment of a muscle to an immovable or less movable bone.
Insertion
The attachment of a muscle to a movable bone.
Skeletal Muscle
Striated muscle attached to bones, under voluntary control, and capable of rapid contraction.
Cardiac Muscle
Striated and branching muscle found only in the walls of the heart, controlled involuntarily.
Smooth Muscle
Non-striated muscle found in the walls of hollow organs, controlled involuntarily.
Striations
Obvious banding patterns found in skeletal and cardiac muscle tissues.
Intercalated Discs
Specialized junctions in cardiac muscle cells that connect them.
Tissues
Groups of similar cells that perform a specific function.
