What are the two components to respiration
inhale and exhale
What do we inhale?
Oxygen
What do we exhale
Carbon dioxide/carbonite
What exchanges the oxygen with the carbon dioxide
alveoli
What is Respiration
It is the exhange of the gases
Gas exchange
the internal respiration through the blood and cells
Upper respiratory tract includes what?
Nose, nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses, the pharynx
Lower respiratory tract includes what?
Larynx and the lungs
What is used interchangeably with the throat?
The pharynx
What is used interchangeably with the voice box?
The larynx
Where is the nasopharynx located?
The nose
Where is the oral pharynx located?
The mouth
Where is the laryngeal pharynx located?
In the larynx
Where are the vocal cords?
In the layrnx
What does the cartilage in the trachea do?
It helps hold it open so it does not collapse
What does the epiglottis do?
It helps to keep food from going in the airway
Why does the epiglottis need to close?
So you don’t aspirate
What protects you from getting aspiration pneumonia?
The epiglottis
Which lung has three lobes?
The right lung
Which lung has two lobes?
The left lung
Why does the left side of the lung only have two lobes?
The heart
What do alveolar macrophages do?
They eat, engulf, consume, or kill any bacteria
Where is the apex
The top of the lung
What is the bottom of the lung called
The base
Where is the visceral pleura?
It is next to the lung
Where is the parietal pleura?
Outside of the lung
Why do we need fluid in the pleural space?
So that the walls don’t hit and rub and have friction
What two cavities does the diaphragm separate
Abdominal and thoracic
What happens to the diaphragm when you inhale
It will contract and pull down
What happens to your diaphragm when you exhale
It will relax
What does the intercostal muscles do
It helps to bring the ribs out so we can get a full breath
What is euphea
It is a normal breath
What is hyperpnea
It is a forced breath
What is atmospheric pressure
It is when there is a negative respiratory pressure
What is absolute pressure
There is zero respiratory pressures equal to the atmospheric pressure
What does surfactant do?
It allows alveoli to expand and close
What is a spirometry
It is a machine that can tell the lung capacity
What happens when you have low hemoglobin?
It makes it hard to breath
What binds to hemoglobin?
IronW
Where would you find the intercostal nerves
In the initercostal muscle
What is apnea
No breathing
What is hyperventilation
Fast breathing
What is dyspnea
Disfunction of the lungs
