Simulation

Computer representations of real things or situations that vary over time, designed for a particular purpose.

Undecidable Problem

A problem for which no algorithm can ever be written that will always give a correct true/false decision for every input value.

Lossy

Algorithms that are not fully reversible; only an approximation of the original data can be reconstructed.

Lossless

Algorithms that are reversible, allowing the original data to be perfectly reconstructed.

Analog

Data that have values changing smoothly, varying continuously rather than in discrete intervals.

Bits

A single unit of data that can only have one of two values, typically represented as 0 (off) and 1 (on).

Bytes

Groups of 8 bits.

Metadata

Data about data, such as the date of creation or file size of a piece of data.

Overflow Errors

Errors that occur when there are not enough bits to represent the data.

Binary Search

An algorithm that eliminates half of a sorted list repeatedly to find the desired value.

Linear Search

An algorithm that does a complete traversal of the list.

Heuristic

A problem-solving approach that uses practical methods, not guaranteed to be perfect or optimal.

Digital

Information represented as ones and zeros.

ASCII

A table that outlines conventions for converting binary values and alphanumeric characters, representing 128 different characters.

Alphanumeric

Characters consisting of uppercase and lowercase letters along with numerals 0-9.

Bit String

A sequence of bits used to represent sets or manipulate binary data.

Mapping

Associating each element of a given set with one or more elements of a second set.

Data

Characters, symbols, or quantities on which operations are performed, stored, and/or transmitted by a computer.

Unicode

A binary encoding system that represents more of the world's text than ASCII, with 65,536 different characters.

Digital Noise

Irrelevant or meaningless data that has infiltrated otherwise meaningful code.
