What are some reasons that we use animals for research into biological behaviour

  • animals have simpler but similar CNS so it is easier to see what is happening in an organism.

  • It’s possible to control the environment in which non humans live , enabling rigorous controls

  • it’s possible to conduct invasive procedure on animals

2
New cards

As technology improves the way we can access the brain, the need for animal studies decreases so what do we use?

The artificial neural network

3
New cards

What is the artificial neural network

Computer models inspired by an animals CNS

  • that are capable of basic learning presented as interconnected neuron’s that can compute values from input

Explain Lab experiments with internal validity on use of animals and Other strengths

  • Lab experiments have a degree of internal validity as animals are naive about what’s happening , since behaviour is unlikely to change due to demand characteristics in humans

  • Experimentation on animals have a higher degree of control as the animals are in cages and we are able to isolate variables from animals which would be more difficult in humans

5
New cards

In terms of ethical guidelines, is it justified to use a few animals to generalise to humans of a greater population

  • as it helps a number of people it can be justifies but it is argued that we have morel obligation to our own species to advance knowledge and reduce suffering

6
New cards

Arguments against

  • it lacks ecological validity as lab based experiments produce different behaviour to animal neutral experiments

  • Generalisation between animals and humans are guilty of Anthropomorphism ( animals are mistakenly attributed with human qualities

  • It can be argued that animals have the same rights as humans and we have moral obligation to protect them, no amount of regulation can justify animal research

7

What sì ANTHOPOMORPHISM

Where animals mistakenly attributes with human qualities
