What creates an electric field
Electric charges
What is an electric field
the region (around a charged object) where another charged
object experiences a force
Where are electric fields created around
Any electrically charged objects
Describe the strength of a field in relation to distance to object/particle
Closer to object you get the stronger the field is the further away the weaker it is
How can you show an electric field and describe the position they are in
You can show an electric field around an object using field lines
Field lines go from positive to negative
They are at right angles to the surface
What does the closer the field lines suggest
Closer together the field lines are the stronger the field is
What happens to charged objects in an electric field
They feel a force, if they’re oppositely charged there will be an attractive force between them (electrostatic force / attraction)
If there have the same charge , the two particles/objects would repel each other (like charges repel)
Explain how sparking can be explained by electric fields
-sparks are caused when there is a high potential difference between a charged object and the Earth (or an earthed object).
– A high potential difference causes a strong electric field between a charged object and the earthed object.
– The strong electric field cause electrons in the particles to be removed (this is known as ionisation).
– air is normally an insulator but when it’s ionised it is more conductive, so our current can flow through it this is the spark
