RCIA
The Church's process for welcoming adults into full communion with the Catholic Church.
Inquiry / Pre-Catechumenate
Also called the 'Period of Evangelization.' Ask questions, learn about Christianity. No formal commitment yet.
Catechumenate
Formal enrollment as a catechumen (person preparing for Baptism). Study Scripture, Church teachings, prayer, moral life.
Purification & Enlightenment
Focus on self-reflection, repentance, and conversion during Lent. Includes Rites of Scrutiny.
Sacraments of Initiation
For adults not yet baptized: Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist. For baptized Christians of other denominations: Confirmation, Eucharist.
Mystagogy
Post-initiation period that helps new members understand and live out their faith.
Sponsors/Godparents
Guide and support candidates in the RCIA process.
Catechists
Teach faith, Scripture, and moral life.
Priests/Bishops
Administer sacraments during the RCIA process.
Confirmation
Completes Baptismal grace and strengthens the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
Confirmation Requirements
Baptized Catholic (or receive Baptism simultaneously), adequate preparation, choose a Confirmation name, choose a sponsor.
Ritual Elements of Confirmation
Includes laying on of hands, anointing with Chrism oil, and words spoken by Bishop/Priest.
Gifts of the Holy Spirit
Seven gifts that strengthen moral and spiritual life: Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, Fortitude, Knowledge, Piety, Fear of the Lord.
Fruits of the Holy Spirit
Twelve visible signs of living in the Spirit: Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control, modesty, goodness, chastity.
Symbols of Confirmation
Oil (Chrism), Dove, Fire/Tongues of Fire, Laying on of Hands.
Roles in Confirmation
Candidate receives the sacrament; Sponsor models Christian life; Bishop/Priest confirms.
Mystagogy (Extra Key Concept)
Learning to live the faith fully after initiation.
Connection to Baptism
Confirmation strengthens the grace received at Baptism.
RCIA vs. Kids' Catechesis
RCIA is for adults; kids usually follow religious education programs like CCD.
Sponsor Role
Encourages, guides, and prays for the candidate.
Scrutinies
Rites during RCIA Lent period to prepare candidates spiritually.
Easter Vigil
The main liturgy for adults entering the Church.
Confirmation Name
Usually chosen in honor of a saint; reflects the candidate's spiritual role model.
