Phospholipid Bilayer
A double layer of phospholipids that makes up the cell membrane.
Hydrophilic
Substances that attract water; they are water-attracting.
Hydrophobic
Substances that repel water; they are water-repelling.
Osmosis
The diffusion of water across a selectively permeable membrane.
Isotonic
A solution where the concentration of solute is the same inside and outside the cell.
Hypertonic
A solution where the concentration of solute is higher outside the cell than inside.
Hypotonic
A solution where the concentration of solute is lower outside the cell than inside.
Selectively Permeable
A property of the cell membrane that allows certain substances to pass through while blocking others.
Dynamic Equilibrium
A state where the concentration of substances is balanced and does not change over time.
Negative Feedback Loop
A process that counteracts a change to bring the system back to its set point.
Positive Feedback Loop
A process that amplifies a change or deviation from the norm, leading to a greater change.
Exocytosis
The process by which a cell expels materials through vesicles that fuse with the plasma membrane.
Endocytosis
The process by which a cell takes in materials by engulfing them in a vesicle.
Thermoregulation
The process of maintaining an internal temperature within a tolerable range.
