Provisioning, supporting, regulating, and cultural ecosystem services of WETLANDS

Prov: Habitat for our food (fish, crabs)

Supp: Nutrient recycling by soil, groundwater recharge

Regu: Co2 sequestration, flood control

Cult: Revenue from tourism, fishing, camping, research

2
New cards

Threats to wetlands

- Development/changing land use: Covering wetlands for building homes or making farms

- Overfishing disrupts food web

- Pollution leads to eutrophication

- Dam construction reduces waterflow and nutrient-rich sediment flow

3
New cards

Provisioning, supporting, regulating, and cultural ecosystem services of MANGROVES

Prov: Provides wood, a subsistence fuel. Provides our food

Supp: Water filtration, groundwater recharge

Regu: Co2 sequestration, flood protection

Cult: Tourism, canoeing

4
New cards

Threats to mangroves

- Changing land use: Shrimp aquaculture, beachfront property development, rice paddies. These all disrupt habitat.

- Pollution

How to prevent pollution from run off

- Cover crops: Grow additional vegetation alongside crops to hold soil and fertilizer

- Riparian buffers: Grow vegetation in riparian areas. These guys act like big sponges to capture run off + sediment about to enter a river

- Better animal waste management: Turn manure into fertilizer pellets, store manure in manure lagoons with rubber mining to prevent leaking
