How did you prepare for the inspection of the Basingstoke industrial unit?
I undertook a desktop risk assessment arranged access with the occupier and confirmed that PPE would be required.
What PPE did you use during the inspection?
I wore the appropriate PPE specified by the occupier to mitigate risks associated with the industrial environment.
Why was it important to inform your manager before the site visit?
Informing my manager ensured the organisation was aware of my location and any potential risks which supports lone working procedures.
What hazard did you identify at the Waterloo storage unit?
I identified a large steel tube leaning against the wall in a shared hallway which posed a potential trip or injury hazard.
Why did you not move the steel tube yourself?
Moving the object could have exposed me to personal risk and may not have been safe so I reported it through Network Rail’s Close Call system.
What is the purpose of the Close Call reporting system?
The system allows hazards or near misses to be recorded so they can be investigated and addressed to improve safety.
If someone had been injured due to the obstruction what would you do?
I would ensure the incident was reported immediately in accordance with health and safety procedures and ensure appropriate medical assistance was sought.
How would you advise your client to prevent similar hazards?
I would recommend regular inspections of shared areas and reminding occupiers to keep escape routes clear.
