How does group size affect conformity?
- Conformity increases with group size, - However group sizes larger than 3 made little difference and rates levelled off.
How does unanimity affect conformity?
- Unanimity in wrong answer meant ppt was more likely to conform
- The presence of a dissenter decreases conformity rates
- The dissenter allowed the participant to act more independently
How does task difficulty affect conformity?
- participants would conform more when the task was harder
- people look to others as they think they are correct - informational SI.
Limitations
- artificial task - lacks external validity and demand characteristics
- All male, American participants
Strengths
- Support from other studies for task difficulty - Lucas’ easy & hard maths questions - ppts conformed more when questions were harder
- Lab study, so control over variables
