What are the three main types of motivation on the SDT continuum?
Amotivation, controlled motivation, and autonomous motivation.
Define amotivation.
Lack of motivation — no intent to act.
Example of amotivation.
Athlete doesn’t see the point in training.
Define controlled extrinsic motivation.
Driven by external pressures or rewards.
Define external regulation.
Doing something to avoid punishment or gain a reward.
Example of external regulation.
Training to avoid being dropped from a team.
Define introjected regulation.
Motivated by guilt, shame, or pride.
Example of introjected regulation.
Training so you don’t feel like a failure.
Define autonomous extrinsic motivation.
Behaviour originates externally but has been internalised by the athlete.
Define identified regulation.
Acting because behaviour is personally important.
Example of identified regulation.
Training because you know it improves fitness.
Define integrated regulation.
Fully accepting behaviour as part of identity.
Example of integrated regulation.
“I train because being an athlete is part of who I am.”
Define intrinsic motivation.
Doing an activity purely for enjoyment or satisfaction.
Example of intrinsic motivation.
Playing football because it’s fun and exciting.
