Crown of the tooth
-extends above the gingivae
-consists of the enamel, dentin, and pulp cavity

Enamel
hardest tissue in the body

Dentin
material similar to bone except that it does not contain osteocytes

Pulp cavity
-surrounded by the enamel and dentin
-hollow region in the center of the crown that contains neurovascular structures of the tooth

Neck of the tooth
constricted portion of the tooth covered by gingivae and marks the boundary between the root and crown

Roots of teeth
-processes extending within the alveolar bone and help to anchor the tooth to the bone
-consists of the cementum, dentin, root canal, and periodontal ligament
Cementum
-outer layer of roots is composed of this
-highly innervated layer and softer than enamel

Root canal
-hollow passage within the root and is continuous with the pulp cavity
-conducts blood vessels and nerves of the tooth from the alveolar bone to the pulp cavity

Periodontal ligament
consists of collagenous fibers that connect the tooth root firmly to the alveolar bone
