simvastatin moa
inhibit HMG-CoA reductase (liver uses that enzyme to produce cholesterol) -> lower rate of cholesterol production

Niacin moa
increase activity of lipase -> breaks down lipids -> reduces metabolism of cholesterol
Niacin (2) side effects
flushing (caused by histamine release), rhabdomyolysis
Niacin what to do to decrease some of the side effects
flushing can be decreased if niacin is started on a smaller dose and slowly increased. Premedication with a small dose of aspirin or NSAID 30 min before taking med and taking niacin with meals helps decrease side effects

abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, nausea, increased risk of gallstones
Ezetimibe moa
inhibits absorption of cholesterol from small intestine -> reduced total cholesterol, LDL, and triglyceride levels

GI issues, joint pain, elevated liver enzymes
