Lokelma
A drug that lowers potassium but has a long onset time, making it unsuitable for emergency treatment.
Hyperkalemia
A condition characterized by elevated levels of potassium in the blood.
SABA
Short-Acting Beta Agonist, used for rapid relief of asthma symptoms.
SAMA
Short-Acting Muscarinic Antagonist, used in respiratory therapies to relax bronchial tubes.
Ipratropium Bromide
A SAMA with a trade name of Atrovent, used to provide bronchodilation.
Bronchiectasis
A lung disease associated with cystic fibrosis characterized by abnormal dilation of the bronchial walls.
Cystic Fibrosis
A genetic disorder affecting exocrine glands, leading to thick mucus production and lung complications.
Pulmozyme (Dornase Alpha)
A mucolytic specifically used for patients with cystic fibrosis that breaks down DNA in mucus.
Mucociliary Escalator
A mechanism that cleans the airways by moving mucus and trapped debris out of the lungs.
Hypertonic Saline
A saline solution with a higher concentration of salt that draws water out of tissues and is used as a mucolytic.
Acetylcysteine (Mucamist)
A mucolytic agent that breaks down mucus by disrupting disulfide bonds, also used as an antidote for Tylenol overdose.
Anticholinergic Effect
Side effects related to the inhibition of parasympathetic nervous system activity, often causing dry mouth.
Dry Powder Inhaler (DPI)
A device used for delivering medication in the form of a dry powder for inhalation.
Nebulizer
A device that turns liquid medication into a mist for inhalation, commonly used in respiratory therapy.
Insulin
A hormone used to lower potassium levels rapidly, along with other medications like sodium bicarbonate.
Albuterol
A bronchodilator that is often used in conjunction with other medications for respiratory treatment.
