Mrs. C Gren

Movement, respiration, sensitivity, control, growth, reproduction, excretion, and nutrition

2
New cards

What is movement?

an action by an organism or part of an organism causing a change of position or place. movement in plants: venus fly trap closing. movement in animals: a fish swimming. animals move their whole bodies but plants change their orientation

3
New cards

What is respiration?

the chemical reaction (taking place in the mitochondria) that breaks down nutrient molecules in all living cells to release energy for metabolism. respiration in plants: converting glucose and oxygen into energy and water for cellular activities like growth, maintenance, and reproduction. respiration in animals: using gas exchange to break down ingested food for energy

4
New cards

What is sensitivity?

the ability to detect or sense stimuli in the internal or external environment and to make appropriate response (involves nervous and skeletal system) plants: orientation changes when it’s placed by a sunny window. animals: eyes close when light shines into them

5
New cards

What is control?

living organisms must control their internal environment in order to keep conditions within required limits (homeostasis). animals: thermoregulations keeps body temperature a the optimum level (37 degrees). plants: use transpiration to maintain a suitable temperature

6
New cards

What is growth?

a permanent increase in size and mass by an increase in cell number or cell size. plants: grows up towards sunlight (phototropism) and roots grow down because of gravity (geotropism). animals: their mass and weight increases from baby to adult

7
New cards

What is reproduction?

the process that makes more of the same kind of organism/species plants: pollination of a flower (anther and filaments carrying pollen to the ovaries). animals: parents fusing sex cells to make offspring

8
New cards

What is excretion?

the removal from organisms of toxic materials, the waste products of metabolism, and substances in excess of requirements. animals: carbon dioxide and water are excreted during respiration. plants: oxygen from photosynthesis and water and carbon dioxide from respiration

9
New cards

What is nutrition?

the taking in of materials for energy, growth, and development. plants: use water, sunlight, and carbon dioxide to produce glucose and oxygen for nutrition (autotrophic). animals: consume other organisms and break it down during digestion, they need organic compounds like glucose, ions, and water

New cards

Locomotion

movement of an organism from place to place
