What is the Arabic name for God?
Allah
What does ‘Tawhid’ mean?
The Arabic word for God’s oneness. There is only one God and God is one.
What are some characteristics of God/Allah?
Sovereignty- ultimate power and knowledge, Compassionate, Merciful, Has control over a persons destiny.
What is the Qur’an?
The holy text in Islam. It contains stories, prayers, commands and guidance on how Muslims should live. It is written in Arabic. It is the sacred word of God as dictated to Muhammad by the archangel Gabriel (Jibril).
What is a prophet?
An individual who has claimed to have been contacted by God. They are go-between humans and God. The message that the prophet conveys is called a prophecy.
What are some examples of a prophet?
Adam, Noah, Abraham, Ishmael, Jacob, Moses, David, Solomon, Jesus and the main one Muhammad. (All the biblical names).
How do Muslims feel about Jesus?
Muslims love Jesus too, He is a prophet and messenger, both Christians and Muslims believe things like Jesus was born of the Virgin Mary. But they most certainly believe that Jesus is not God, not the son of God and is not part of a trinity of God.
What was Muhammad’s story?
He was chosen by God to tell others that there was only one God. He received the first verses of the Qur’an by archangel Gabriel. Muhammad spoke openly and the people of Makkah didn’t like it, so him and his followers left Makkah to live in Madinah. Later him and his followers returned to Makkah where battles took place (the Makkans were beaten). Finally the Kaaba was restored and Mecca became the Muslim city.
What does ‘Ummah’ mean?
The Arabic word for community or people. It refers to the whole community of Muslims. Ummah unites Muslims as despite differences between them, this is because all people are equal in the Ummah and people can feel at home with others.
What does ‘Masjid’ mean?
The Arabic word for the mosque, a place of worship to Allah.
What are some internal features of a Mosque?
Mihrab- an archway that pints the way to Mecca, Washroom- used to wash hands, feet and face before praying (wudu), Prayer rooms- a small space focused on worship, Classrooms- To teach students about their own religion and learn things like Arabic, Shoe storage area- to keep shoes organised before prayer when you take them off, Minbar- raised platform where the Imam may speak.
what are some external features of a Mosque?
The shape of a roof of a Mosque is usually a dome to keep the prayer hall cool, Minaret- A tall tower where the muezzin will do the call to prayer from (may be using a loudspeaker nowadays).
Why is Mecca an important place for Muslims?
It was where Muhammad was born and it is where he received the first revelations from Allah.
Why is the Hajj an important journey?
As it is part of the five pillars of Islam, and Mecca is a sacred place where only Muslims are allowed. Muslims should try and go on this pilgrimage at least once in their lifetime. It is a time to connect and get forgiveness from God.
What happens during the Hajj?
Pilgrims enter a state of spiritual purity and wear specific garments.
Pilgrims circle the Kaaba seven times in a counter-clockwise direction.
Walk seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwaha.
A day of prayer and reflection.
Sacrifice of an animal.
What are the five pillars of Islam?
Shahada- Faith, two simple beliefs, God is the only God and Muhammad is the prophecy of God.
Salah- Prayer, Muslims have to pray five times a day to show love to Allah.
Zakat- Almsgiving, when Muslims wealthier must give poorer people money (charity) This is normally 2-3% of their income.
Sawm- Fasting, during the 29-30 days of Ramadan Muslims give up any food or drink during the hours of daylight. They also try to be better Muslims in general.
Hajj- Pilgrimage, a 5-6 day journey to Mecca in Saudi Arabia, a chance for Muslims to connect and get forgiveness from God.
What do you think the most important pillar is?
Shahada because you can’t be a Muslim without it, it’s commanded in the Qur’an, it unites all Muslims, doesn’t take up much time even though it is said everyday, anyone can do it.
What is Ramadan and how do Muslims celebrate it?
Ramadan is the time where Muslims celerate the time when the Qur’an was revealed to Muhammad. It takes place during the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. During Ramadan Muslims will fast meaning giving up food and drink during daylight hours. It’s also a time for Muslims to pray and read the Qur’an.
What is Eid and how do Muslims celebrate it?
The celebration for the end of the month of Ramadan, and of fasting. Muslims spend time with family, give money to the poor, share meals together, pray and exchange gifts. They often wear their best clothes and greet each other with ‘Eid Mubarak’. It is one of the biggest Muslim festivals.
What happens after death?
Two judging angels will question each person after death, testing their faith. If they haven’t lived a life of submission to God they will be incapable of answering the questions. God also weighs each persons deeds, intentions are also taken into consideration as well.
What are heaven and hell like?
Heaven (also known as Jannah) is a state of joy happiness and peace. Hell (also known as Jahannam) is a state of torment and suffering. After judgment people will pass over a very narrow bridge. Those who make it over have been blessed by God and will go to Jannah, Those who fail to pass over the bridge will fall to Jahannam.
