Endodontics is
dental specialty that treats pathology of the pulp and periapical tissues
An RCT
removes the dental pulp and fills it
In a rct what is performed first
a pulpectomy (removal of pulp)
After a pulpectomy the canal is
shaped and filled
When the pulp is removed the canal space is prepared and shaped with
files and rotary instruments
What is put in the canal to fill the space?
Gutta percha
What is gutta percha cemented with
A sealer (Zinc Oxide Eugenol)
Why is gutta percha put into the canal space?
Prevents leakage of oral fluids into the periapical tissues.
Common irrigants used in a rct
-sodium hypochlorite
-Chlorhexidine
Silver points are
RCT filling material not used much today
Gutta percha contains
barium sulfate (radiopaque)
Silver points are composed of
66% zinc oxide
Silver points contain heavy metal salts that causes it to
corrode
What are treatment options if RCT fails?
-retreatment
-extraction
-apicoectomy + reftrofill
Apicoectomy
surgical procedure that removes 1-3 mm of root apex
retrofill
only apical portion of the canal is prepared (amalgam is put at end of root then)
Endodontic post
metal or fiber rods placed in the canal after a RCT to retain the core build up (under crown)
A post doesn't
-prevent fracture
-strengthen tooth
An endodontic post is NEVER used if
not enough tooth structure to retain the core
what are three types of posts
-custom cast posts
-preformed metal post
-non-metal post
Retention pins are
small metal screws that are placed in large restorations to retian the filling
retention pins
weakens the tooth
A dental implant MUST
osseointegrate
