Sterilization
The process that destroys all viable microorganisms including endospores and viruses.
Disinfection
A process or agent that destroys all vegetative bacteria pathogens but not bacterial endospores.
Decontamination
A cleansing technique that physically removes microorganisms to a level that is safe for use.
Antisepsis
A process that reduces the number of microbes on human skin.
Cidal agents
Agents that actively kill living bacteria.
Static agents
Agents that inhibit and slow growth but do not kill bacteria.
Moist heat
Using water in the form of steam or boiling to control microbial growth.
Dry heat
Using an oven or incineration to control microbial growth, usually sterilizing but slower.
Ionizing radiation
Radiation that can penetrate materials and is effective for sterilization.
Non-ionizing radiation
Typically UV radiation that is used for disinfection.
Filtration
A method of removing microorganisms using filters without killing them.
Osmotic pressure
Creating a hypertonic environment to dehydrate pathogens.
Chemical agents
Various substances used to control microbial growth, chosen based on intended use and safety.
