What is determinism?
The philosophical idea that human free will is an illusion as all events have a cause; it doesn’t require a belief in a divine being but is reliant upon the concept of universal causation
What is hard determinism?
The incompatibilist approach that all actions are caused and humans are hence not free
Philosophical determinism
John Locke
Who was John Locke?
Philosopher who distinguished between ‘freedom’ & ‘will’ using the analogy of a man in a locked room
What does this analogy claim?
The man chooses to stay in the room, so believes he has free will but in being locked, his free will is merely an illusion that would dissipate upon trying to open the door
According to Locke…
the will to perform a specific action derives from a desire, such as to achieve pleasure e.g when an individual feels hungry, they have the desire to eat and do so
Locke’s approach is considered…
more so related to soft determinism as he claims humans can examine their desires
