Muscles of Facial Expression
Muscles originating from skull bones and inserting into the skin of the face, allowing for a wide range of facial expressions.
Mastication
The act of chewing food.
Origin of Facial Expression Muscles
Surface of the skull.
Insertion of Facial Expression Muscles
Dermis of the skin.
Occipitofrontalis
Muscle that raises eyebrows and wrinkles forehead.
Orbicularis Oculi
Muscle responsible for closing the eyes.
Buccinator
Muscle that compresses cheeks, as in whistling.
Masseter
Muscle that elevates the mandible and closes the jaw.
Temporalis
Muscle that elevates and retracts the mandible.
Sternocleidomastoid
Muscle that flexes the neck.
Splenius Capitis
Muscle that extends head and neck, allowing for lateral flexion.
Diaphragm
Muscle that expands the thoracic cavity and compresses the abdominopelvic cavity during breathing.
Rib Elevation
Action performed by external intercostals and scalenes.
Linea Alba
White, fibrous band of connective tissue running from the sternum to the pubis.
Rectus Abdominis
Muscle that compresses abdomen and flexes spine.
Transverse Abdominis
Muscle that compresses the abdomen.
