“its” is possessive while “it's” is a contraction of “it is”

“affect” is a verb while “effect” is a noun

connects two closely related independent clauses. common before conjunctive adverbs. can sometimes divide items in a list if the items contain punctuation

When should a colon ( : ) be used

introduces an element or series of elements

When should a dash ( - ) be used

interrupt writing to insert an intersection or pause. more common in fiction and casual text.
