Oral communication
Communication that is spoken by mouth, not written.
Written communication
Transmitting messages in written form; transcription of thoughts and ideas into writing.
Communication
The process of imparting or exchanging information by speaking, writing, or using some other medium.
Systemic
Communication occurs within interdependent systems; changes in any part affect the whole; elements include social setting, physical environment, location, and time.
Irreversible
Communication is continuous and cannot be fully taken back once spoken; it may leave a lasting impression.
Proactive
Receivers actively evaluate the content, purpose, and credibility of the message; meaning is actively constructed.
Symbolic
Messages rely on symbols; symbols are arbitrary but meaningful when shared by a group.
Medium (of transmission)
The channel used to convey a message (verbal, written, visual, in-person, etc.).
Idea formation
The sender develops the idea to be communicated.
Message encoding
Transforming the idea into words, symbols, or gestures to convey meaning.
Message transmission
Sending the encoded message through the selected medium or channel.
Decoding
Receiver interprets the message to understand the intended meaning.
Feedback
Response from the receiver that checks whether the message was understood as intended.
Verbal dimension
Use of language and words to convey a message.
Nonverbal dimension
Facial expressions, gestures, and body language that accompany or replace words.
Formal dimension
Observance of appropriateness in attire, language, and setting.
Informal dimension
Less formal; casual in attire, language, and setting.
Intentional dimension
Messages delivered with a deliberate purpose.
Unintentional dimension
Messages that convey unintended meanings.
