Acute Injury
Immediate in nature and caused by trauma.
Chronic Injury
Results from overuse and is caused by repetitive activity.
Compression
Force that results in a crush of soft tissue, potentially causing bruises or bone fractures.
Tension
Force that stretches tissue up to and beyond its yield point, potentially causing sprains or strains.
Shearing
Force extended across parallel organization of fibers, potentially causing sprains, strains, or fractures.
Bruise/Contusion
Depth is related to the compressive force applied.
Strain
Tear, stretch, or rupture of a muscle or tendon.
Muscle Cramp
Muscle in spasm that will not relax.
Myositis
Inflammation of muscle tissue.
Tendonitis
Inflammation of a tendon.
Bursitis
Inflammation of a bursa.
1st Degree Sprain
Stretched but not torn ligament.
2nd Degree Sprain
Torn but still intact ligament.
3rd Degree Sprain
Ruptured or completely torn ligament.
Pulse/Heart Rate
Number of times your heart beats a minute.
Tachycardia
Very rapid pulse rates; usually over 100 beats per minute.
Bradycardia
Slow pulse rates less than 60 beats per minute.
Carotid Pulse
Neck (between muscles and throat); supplies blood to the head, neck, and brain.
Brachial Pulse
Upper arm (between Bicep and Triceps); supplies blood to the arm/hand.
Radial Pulse
Wrist (Anterior Lateral side); supplies blood to the hand.
Primary Survey
Checking for Airway, Breathing, and Circulation.
Secondary Survey
More specifically looks at the injury after the primary survey is cleared.
HIPS
History, Inspection, Palpation, Special
RICE
Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation
HOPS
History, Observation, Palpation, Special Tests
