Proprioceptors
mechanoreceptors involved in sense of position, movement of muscles, posture, and equilibrium
Monitor and “correct” musculoskeletal system
Monitored by cerebellum to coordinate skeletal muscles
What are the two types of proprioceptors?
Muscle spindles
Golgi tendon organ
Muscle spindles
located between muscle fibers; sense length/stretch
Activates when muscles stretch too quickly
Muscle spindles example
Falling asleep in class; knee-jerk reflex-stretching tendon at bottom of quads too quickly
Golgi tendon organ
located in the tendon, close to muscle
Relaxes the muscle (inhibits) in response to high force/contraction
Golgi tendon organ example
knee buckling
