What is a State?
Political community that occupies a definite territory and has organized government with power to make and enforce laws.
What makes up a State?
Population, Territory, Government, Sovereignty
Unitary
all key powers are given to a national or central government
Federal Power
Divided between national and smaller branches of government
Monarchy
A form of government with a monarch at the head, ran by a king/queen/emperor
Oligarchy
a system where a small group of people have control of the country, like the communist party
Democracy
a system of government that is controlled/ruled by the people/ like the US
Autocracy
ruled by one person, like a dictator
Theocracy
Ruled by Religious principal and figures

Legislative Power
Congress both expressed (directly states in the constitution) and implied (Elastic Clause) congress has all powers that are “Necessary and Proper” to help them carry out expressed powers
Executive Powers
President, is the commander in chief, has the power to pardon, and can point judges, as well as meet with world leaders.
Judicial Branch
System of court that interprets and applies the law.
Restraint
Makes rulings based on the constitution word for word without interpretation
Activism
They still base decisions on the US constitution, but also may include modern interpretations
How all interact
they all work together in a way they are designed to have a constant tug of war between each other so that no one person or group can take over the whole government, they work intertwined.
