Materials
Artists often experiment with unconventional materials to achieve desired effects, whereas artisans specialize in traditional materials like wood, clay, or textiles that are integral to their craft.
There can be considerable overlap between artists and artisans; some artists create functional pieces that reflect their artistic vision, while artisans may innovate within their traditional methods.
Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan(GAMABA)
-honors the significance of the traditional and folk masters as a link between the skills of past and future generations.
- The award specifically aims to revitalize a community's artistic tradition, thereby protecting a valuable facet of Philippine culture; it provides mechanisms of identifying qualified traditional and folk artists and assisting in the transference of their skills to the community; and create opportunities for popularizing their works locally and internationally.
GAMABA Logo
is a stylized representation of the human form used in traditional cloth. Below the motif is 'Manlilikha ng Bayan' written in ancient Filipino script extensively used throughout the Philippines at the time of Western contact in the sixteenth century.
National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA)
is the highest policy-making body for the culture and the arts.
Tasked with the administration and implementation of the award
Conducts the search for the finest traditional artists of the land, adopts a program that will ensure the transfer of their skills to others, and undertakes measures to promote a genuine appreciation of and instill pride among our people about the genius of the Manlilikha ng Bayan.
HOW DOES ONE BECOME A MANLILIKHA NG BAYAN?
To become a Manlilikha ng Bayan, an individual or group candidate must:
Possess a mastery of tools and materials needed for the traditional, folk art and be a maker of works of extraordinary technical quality;
Have consistently produced works of superior quality over significant period;
Have engaged in a traditional and folk art which has been in existence and documented for at least fifty (50) years;
Command respect and inspire admiration of the country with his character and integrity;
Must have transferred and/or willing to transfer to other members of the community the skills in the traditional and folk arts for which the community has become nationally known.
However, a candidate who, due to age or infirmity, has left him/her/them incapable of teaching further his/her/their craft, may still be recognized provided that he/she/they must possess the qualifications stated.

This law enabled the government "to give appropriate recognition and prestige to Filipinos who have distinguished themselves and made outstanding contributions to Philippine arts and letters."

The Order of the National Artists Award / Orden Ng Gawad Pambansang Alagad ng Sining
is the highest recognition given to Filipino individuals who have made significant contributions to the development of Philippine arts namely: Music, Dance, Theater, Visual Arts, Literature, Film and Broadcast Arts, Architecture and Allied Arts.
Honor and Privileges
• Cash award of 200,000 Php (for living awardees)
Cash award of 150,000 Php for posthumous awardees (payable to the legal heir)
Monthly stipend of 50,000 Php
A state funeral benefit not exceeding half a million pesos
Life insurance to those who are still insurable
Place of honor in state functions
A place of burial in the Libingan ng mga Bayani (optional)
