What are suspension, traction, saltation and solution?
Processes where water moves sediment
What is meant by suspension?
Fine sediment is carried and transported in the water though its flow
What can suspension make the water appear like?
Muddy
What are some examples of fine sediment?
Silt and clay
What is meant by traction?
The rolling and dragging of large sediment along the bed of the water
What is considered large sediment?
Rocks and boulders
What is meant by saltation?
Sediment particles bounce and leap from the ground which is driven by the water
What are some examples of sediment particles?
Sand and small pebbles
What is meant by solution?
A type of chemical weathering and erosion where slightly acidic water dissolves soluble minerals and invisibly carries them away with the water flow
What are some examples of soluble minerals?
Limestone and chalk
What is longshore drift?
Waves approach the coast at an angle and carry sediment along the coast in a zig-zag pattern through swash
Why do waves approach the coast at an angle in longshore drift?
Due to prevailing winds
How does backwash link with longshore drift?
It results in the gradual sediment transportation down the coast
