AP Gov Amendments

1st Amendment

Freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly and petition.

2nd Amendment

Right to bear arms.

3rd Amendment

Prohibits the government from quartering soldiers in private homes during peacetime without the owner's consent

4th Amendment

No unreasonable search & seizure

5th Amendment (“you have the right to”)

Protects individuals from self-incrimination, guarantees due process of law, and prohibits double jeopardy (being tried twice)

6th Amendment

Speedy public trial, right to confront witness & seek trial

7th Amendment

Guarantees jury in judicial trial

8th Amendment

Prohibits excessive bail, excessive fines, and cruel and unusual punishments

9th Amendment

Just because a right isn’t specifically mentioned doesn’t mean its not a right that people have

10th Amendment

The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people

11th Amendment

States can't be sued in federal court by citizens of other states or by foreign citizens

12th Amendment

Separate votes for president and vice-president.

13th Amendment

Abolished slavery

14th Amendment

Makes former slaves citizens and entitles them to due process (fair trial) and equal protection under the law.

15th Amendment

Guarantees voting rights for former slaves.

16th Amendment

Establishes a federal income tax.

17th Amendment

The direct election of senators by the people of each state

19th Amendment

Gives women the right to vote.

20th Amendment

Shortened the time between elections and the start of new presidential and congressional terms

22nd Amendment

Establishes a two-term limit for presidents.

23rd Amendment (think of the 3)

Gives Washington, D.C. three electoral votes.

24th Amendment

Banned poll tax

25th Amendment

Establishes rules for succession of the president dies in office or becomes incapacitated. (President —> Vice —> SofH)

26th Amendment

Changed voting age to 18

27th Amendment

Prohibits any law that raises or lowers the salaries of members of Congress from taking effect until after the next election of Representatives
