What is the eye?
An organ that controls the special sense of sight
What mechanisms are in place to protect the eyeball?
Eyelids, lashes, tears, and conjunctiva
What are lacrimal glands?
Produce tears to cleanse eye
What are the conjunctiva?
Mucous membrane that protects the eye
What are the three layers of the eye?
Sclera, choroid, and retina
What is the sclera?
The outermost layer that maintains the shape
What is the cornea?
A circular transparent part on the front of the sclera that allows light rays to enter the eye
What is the choroid coat?
Middle layer that is interlaced with many blood vessels
What is the pupil?
Hole in front of the choroid coat, allows light rays to enter
What is the iris?
Colored part of the eye that controls the size of the pupil and regulates the amount of light entering the eye
What is the retina?
Innermost layer of the eye that contains many nerves, cones, and rods
What are cones?
Used for light vision
What are rods?
Used for dark or dim vision
What are lens?
Refracts or bends light to focus on retina
What is the aqueous humor?
Fluid that fills the space between the cornea and iris
What is the vitreous humor?
Jelly that fills the area behind the lens
What is the refraction of light rays?
When light rays enter the eye it passes through a series of parts that bends it.
