The electric potential that arises across a membrane due to the diffusion of ions down their concentration gradient

Equilibrium Potential (E_ion)

The membrane potential at which the net movement of a specific ion stops because the electrical driving force exactly balances the concentration (diffusion) driving force - Ernst equation

Ernst equation - E_ion = (RT/zF) ln([ion]1/[ion]2)

Equilibrium concentration = R (gas constant), T (absolute temperature (K)), F( faradays constant) z (valence of ion)

The actual voltage difference across the cell membrane at any given time, determined by all permeable ions
