caused by firing a barrel that contains an obstruction

Broken Extractor

w/o proper function cartridge case is not removed to allow for next cartridge

Push Off

in which the hammer can be pushed forward w/o the pull of the trigger

Trigger Shoe

an accessory which is attached to the trigger to give a larger, non-slip bearing surface

False Half-Cock

the position of the hammer of a FA when about half retracted & held by the sear, intended to prevent release of hammer w/o normal pull of trigger

Defective Safety

safety is not functioning in its intended manner

High Primer

a primer that has not been fully seated in the primer pocket & extends slightly above the head of the case

Hairline Cracks

microscopic features that compromised the structural integrity & safety of critical components of FA

Excessive Pressure

internal gas pressure that exceeds the safe limits for which the FA/ammo were designed

Jar-Off

a condition in which a FA may fire if dropped or jarred when the safety is off

Hangfire

occurs when there is a noticeable delay between the impact of the hammer or firing pin on the primer & actual discharge of the FA

Sub-caliber Ammunition

a cartridge that is smaller than standard for the FA in which it is used

Misfire

complete failure of a cartridge to fire when the trigger is pulled & the hammer or firing pin falls
