La Rivoluzione Francese: Dalla Crisi alla Repubblica 1. La Francia alla vigilia della crisi Negli anni Ottanta del Settecento, la Francia era una delle principali potenze europee, ma internamente era fragile e divisa in tre ceti sociali (il cosiddetto Antico Regime): • Clero e Nobiltà: Rappresentavano solo il 2% della popolazione ma possedevano il 40% delle terre. Godevano di enormi privilegi e, soprattutto, non pagavano le tasse. • Terzo Stato: Comprendeva il 98% della popolazione (borghesi, professionisti, artigiani e contadini). Erano gli unici a pagare le tasse e vivevano in condizioni di grande miseria, aggravata dai diritti signorili e dai tributi dovuti alla Chiesa. 2. La convocazione degli Stati Generali Le casse dello Stato erano vuote a causa delle spese folli della corte di Versailles e delle guerre. Per evitare il fallimento, il re Luigi XVI decise di tassare anche la nobiltà e il clero. Di fronte all'opposizione dei privilegiati, il re convocò gli Stati Generali il 5 maggio 1789. In tutta la Francia vennero compilati i cahiers de doléances (quaderni di lamentele), dove i cittadini esprimevano le loro proteste: il Terzo Stato chiedeva uguaglianza e la fine dell'assolutismo. 3. L'Assemblea Nazionale e il Giuramento della Pallacorda Negli Stati Generali si discuteva sul sistema di voto: nobiltà e clero volevano il voto "per ordine" (vincendo sempre 2 contro 1), mentre il Terzo Stato chiedeva il voto "per testa". Dopo settimane di stallo, il Terzo Stato si autoproclamò Assemblea Nazionale. Il re cercò di bloccarli, ma i deputati si riunirono nella sala della Pallacorda, giurando di non uscirne finché non avessero dato alla Francia una Costituzione. 4. Lo scoppio della Rivoluzione: 14 luglio 1789 Mentre il re ammassava truppe a Parigi, il popolo, affamato e spaventato, insorse. Il 14 luglio 1789 venne assaltata la Bastiglia, prigione-fortezza simbolo dell'assolutismo. In breve tempo: • Venne formata la Guardia Nazionale per difendere l'Assemblea. • Nelle campagne i contadini assaltarono i castelli dei nobili per bruciare i registri delle tasse. • Il 4 agosto 1789 l'Assemblea dichiarò l'abolizione dei diritti feudali. 5. I diritti dell'uomo e la marcia su Versailles Il 26 agosto 1789 fu approvata la Dichiarazione dei diritti dell'uomo e del cittadino, che sanciva l'uguaglianza di tutti i sudditi. Tuttavia, il re si rifiutò di firmare questi documenti. Il 5 ottobre 1789, una folla composta principalmente da donne marciò su Versailles e costrinse il re a trasferirsi a Parigi, al palazzo delle Tuileries. 6. La Costituzione e la fuga del Re L'Assemblea continuò i lavori e nel settembre 1791 approvò la prima Costituzione: la Francia diventava una Monarchia Costituzionale con la separazione dei poteri (esecutivo al re, legislativo a un'assemblea eletta per censo, giudiziario ai magistrati). Nel frattempo, Luigi XVI cercò di fuggire all'estero per chiedere aiuto alle potenze straniere, ma fu riconosciuto a Varennes e riportato a Parigi. Questo gesto distrusse la fiducia dei francesi verso la monarchia. 7. La guerra e la nascita della Repubblica Le potenze straniere (Austria e Prussia) minacciarono di intervenire per difendere il re. Nell'aprile 1792 la Francia dichiarò guerra. Nonostante le difficoltà iniziali, migliaia di volontari si arruolarono (nasce qui La Marsigliese). Il 10 agosto 1792, il popolo parigino (i sanculotti) assaltò il palazzo reale; Luigi XVI fu arrestato e accusato di tradimento. Il 20 settembre 1792, dopo la vittoria francese a Valmy, l'Assemblea proclamò ufficialmente l'abolizione della monarchia e la nascita della Repubblica. 8. La condanna a morte di Luigi XVI All'interno della Convenzione (la nuova assemblea), si discusse sul destino del re. I montagnardi volevano la morte immediata, mentre i girondini erano più moderati
