Nervous Functions
sensory input, integration, motor output
What makes up the CNS?
Brain and spinal cord
What makes up the PNS?
nerves
what are the two PNS divisions
sensory (afferent) and motor (efferent)
what does the sensory (afferent) division of the PNS do?
carry impulses from PNS TO the CNS
what does the motor (efferent) division of the PNS do?
carry impulses FROM CNS to PNS
what are the two parts of the motor (efferent) division
somatic and automatic
what is the function of Neurologia
the supporting cells. teacher and nanny
What are astrocytes?
in CNS, they connect neurons and capillaries and maintain homeostasis
what are microglia?
phagocytes that monitor neuron health in CNS
what are ependymal cells?
line the brain and spinal cavities
what are oligodendrocytes?
wrap several CNS nerve fibers
what are schwann cells?
wraps one PNS nerve fibers
what are satellite cells?
surround neuron cell bodies with ganglia in PNS
what are axons and dendrites?
axons send signals and dendrites receive signals
what are dendrites?
branched processes that receive input as graded potentials
what are axons?
long process that transmit action potentials
what are myelin sheaths?
formed by Schwann cells or oligodendrocytes around axons that increase impulse speed and protects
what are the differences between multipolar, bipolar, and unipolar?
multipolar has 3 or more processes, bipolar has 2, and unipolar has 1.
