Tell me about yourself.
My name is Heaven Carroll, I am a twin. I am sophomore and I am majoring in Biology and Coastal Environmental Science. I want to be a surgical oncologist and on the side have my own cancer research lab and fundraising. I would like to build free cancer testing centers around the world which I believe would significantly drop the rates of terminal cancer diagnoses, due to cancer being caught sooner. I have a passion for cancer, fashion and serving the elderly. I serve in cancer ministry. do hip-hop dance and do modeling. I am involved in LSU Ambassadors on campus and serve on the membership committee. I also am a video editor and videographer.
What are the 5 point programmatic thrust of Delta?
Economic development, educational development, international awareness and involvement, physical and mental health, political awareness and involvement
What are some well-known social action events Deltas have participated/participates in?
The 1913 Suffragist march - This was the 22 delta founders first public act of service, and marched at the back of the parade in their caps and gowns, despite being segregated by racist organizers
Down in my hometown Memphis Deltas had voter registration and education - The Memphis and DeSoto County Chapters have hosted in person voter registration drives and promoted voting through social media
The American Cancer Society - Deltas do a lot of volunteering, fundraising, advocacy, and education.
What are you most passionate about in terms of the community and why?
I am really passionate about the health resources available to the community, especially when it comes to cancer. Not even mentioning the high prices for getting treated for cancer, you have to pay for getting tested as well. Cancer is a disease that impacts many people; millions of cases diagnosed yearly. And even getting simply tested is unaffordable for some people. Over 2% of the world’s population is homeless, which is over 100 million people. They might not be able to afford things like getting tested, let alone being treated. I would like to build free cancer testing centers around the world which I believe would significantly drop the rates of terminal cancer diagnoses, due to cancer being caught sooner. Something that really touched me as well is Delta has made ties to the disproportionate impact of certain cancers to the African American community and focuses on detecting things sooner, education, and access to care.
What is Delta’s motto? Tell me about a time you exhibited this.
“Intelligence is the torch of wisdom.”
intelligence comes down to understanding and wisdom comes down to applying and how to. An example I could give of this is my grandparents. When I go back home to Memphis I take care of my grandparents. My grandfather is easily tempted, like she smallest inconvenience will set him off. My intelligence helps me understand with my grandfather what happened, why he is behaving the way he is, and what would fix it possibly But my wisdom helps me know how to respond — when to speak, what to say, and when to just listen.
What do you think are the most challenging issues facing the African-American community? How can Iota Theta address them using the 5 point programmatic thrusts?
There is a wealth gap in between white and black households. The median wealth of White House holds are more than triple the wealth of black households. Economic development for sure is very impactful in an area like this. Delta hosts financial workshops (budgeting, credit. etc.), and also supports black-owned business. Along with other great things. I also know, which Delta has openly recognized, that there is a disproportionate impact of certain cancers on the African American community. physical and mental health help with this raising awareness, fundraising, partnerships, like The American Cancer Society, etc.
Is there anything we need to know to access your interest in Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.?
Name the principles of Delta Sigma Theta
Sisterhood, Scholarship, Service, and Social Action
What skills do you possess that would be beneficial to Delta Sigma Theta?
I believe the skills I bring that would contribute most to this sorority are my joy, teamwork, and love for others. Through serving in my church’s cancer ministry, I’ve learned that serving is not just about what you do, but how you make people feel. I’ve seen how genuine joy, encouragement, and simply listening can lift people’s spirits and make them feel seen. I bring that same energy into every environment I’m in. I value sisterhood and service deeply, and I would hope to make Delta a loving environment that not only uplifts its members, but also radiates that same love and care into the community we serve.
I would also bring deeper connection to cancer area as well. I love how delta is already so involved with cancer — through campaigns, partnerships (like the American Cancer Society) and St. Jude.
If CEO for the day, what new program would you implement and why?
Free Cancer Testing. I know everything costs money so I would have to make sure company money is being circulated well and do a lot of fundraising and partnerships but that is 100% what I would do. Something that I am big about that Delta is also big about is early detection, education, and access to care and sadly a reason for late detection and treatment is due to money. I want to give as much as possible without needing to take anything, like patients money.
Name 4 vital components of sisterhood?
Loyalty, Love, Accountability, and respect.
Loyalty - Loyalty is a big thing for me. Having each others backs is very important.
Love - We all of areas where we need other people to love us, even if we don’t know how to love ourselves there yet. Someone who sees you and loves you for who you are, and even gives you tough love the you need it.
Accountability - No yes men. a yes man will do for you just as much as an enemy will do. And that is let you go into the realm of the deep. Accountability partners won’t let you do that.
Respect - Respect for every part of a sister is so important. It builds trust and positive relationships. And it creates a sense of safety.
Name programs the Iota Theta chapter is currently conducting and describe how you can enhance them.
The Health Fair, focusing on wellness resources. I feel like I could help out not only giving my knowledge of health, but even working alongside Delta and other companies to brainstorm/help out with more health resources.
Mental Wellness Workshop: held a mental health workshop called “Self Qare” to offer stress relief and wellness to LSU students. I could contribute by sharing personal experiences (Vulnerability is key for me), being an active listener, helping create a positive environment, etc.
Is there anything we need to know to access your interest in Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.?
What is Deltas mission/purpose?
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc is a private not-for profit organization whose purpose is to provide assistance and support
What programs have you attended of Delta? Which was your favorite and why?
Delta Academy, Delta Gems, Delta Health Fair, Mental wellness workshop. My favorite was the Delta Health Fair. I really loved it because not only did I get to write down what keeps me going and motivated, but also I got to get a note to encourage me throughout my day, and learn new saying about mental health and their accuracy. The one I got was answering true or false to just because someone’s life does great means they are doing great on the inside which is false.
How have you contributed to the culture of a company, team, or organization?
I would use Cancer Ministry for this. I was told by the wonderful ladies I serve with and the wonderful patients I serve I contributed to Cancer ministry by bringing a joyful, loving, hopeful spirit. And the way I do that is just showing love to everyone. Getting to known them on a personal level as a person and not just a number. It had blessed me tremendously as well.
Give an example of when you had to collaborate with someone and you all had conflicting viewpoints
I collaborated with my agent on updating my modeling portfolio. We had a disagreement about one of the photos he had originally selected. He wanted to keep it in and I wanted it to go out. I felt that photo didn’t represent me well, but I knew he had experience and insight, so I approached it respectfully. I started thinking from all his viewpoints and every one I was thinking he could have I tried to meet it (like for ex, wanting 10 photos in my book. If we took that one out, it would be 9.) I said, ‘If I provide a photo that you feel works better, would you consider replacing it?’ He agreed, and we compared the options. In the end, we chose a stronger photo that we both felt confident about. This experience taught me the importance of respectful communication, presenting solutions rather than just problems, and finding common ground when viewpoints differ.”
Give an example of when you had to handle multiple tasks at one time? How did you prioritize?
Name 3 national programs of Delta.
Delta Gems (for high schoolers, focusing on empowering, college, and career planning), EMBODI (Addressing the needs of African American Males), and Healthy Lifestyle Initiative 9focuses o physical and mental wellness and the “total woman”: mind, body and spirit.
Why do you want to be a Delta and name 5 prominent Deltas that you admire.
Godly sisterhood is one of the greatest blessings in my life — not with only my sisters but my friends as well — and that is exactly how I see Delta Sigma Theta, a powerful bond among omen who uplift each other and pour their gifts back int the community. I was raised in a family devoted to service, where giving was a way of life. And that sticks so deeply with me.
Angel Bassett (multi award winning actor), Queen Latifah (also an award winning actor), Aretha Franklin (famous civil right activist), Shonda Rhimes (very successful show writer), and Cicley Tyson (an amazing actor who broke racial barriers in Hollywood, Amercas’s grandma)
How are you personally making an impact in the community. What will you contribute to this sorority?
I serve in my church’s cancer ministry and also work with the elderly. What I bring to these activities is joy and love — really getting to know the people I serve and making them feel seen and valued. I’ve been told by both my fellow volunteers and the patients that my presence brings hope and positivity. Serving this way has blessed me tremendously, and I hope it inspires others to serve with the same heart. If I brought this approach to a sorority like Delta, it could promote a culture of joyful, loving service that not only strengthens our sisterhood but also spreads hope to everyone we serve.
What does sisterhood mean to you? And what does a no tolerance hazing policy mean? And how would you relate the two?
What are two current events that are happening today that Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. should be worried about today.
Give two examples of times when you had to take the initiative with a group or team setting to ensure a project was successfully completed.
What are two programs you would like to see Iota Theta chapter do on campus?
