Cabling
The foundation of networking, essential for communication between devices.
Twisted Pair Copper Cable
A common cable type used for wired ethernet connections, consisting of multiple wires twisted together.
Pairings for twisted copper cables
Transmit+, Transmit- / Receive+, Receive-
Interference
Disturbances that can affect the quality of the signal transmitted through cables.
Throughput
The amount of data that can be transmitted over a network connection in a given amount of time.
Ethernet Standard
Specifications that define how data is transmitted over ethernet cables, such as 802.3.
Cable Categories
Standards that specify the types of cables, such as Category 5, Category 6, etc., used for ethernet connections.
Coaxial Cable
A type of cable with a single wire conductor surrounded by insulation and shielding, commonly used in internet connections.
Twinax
A type of coaxial cable that can support 10 gigabit per second Ethernet and is used for short distances (up to 5m).
Plenum
The space above a drop ceiling which may contain network cables and other infrastructure.
Plenum-rated Cable
Network cable designed to be safer in a fire, usually made with FEP or low-smoke PVC.
Low-smoke Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC)
A type of cable jacket that produces less smoke in case of fire, used for plenum-rated cables.
Fluorinated Ethylene Polymer (FEP)
A safer material used for making plenum-rated cables.
