Umbra
the complete or perfect shadow of an opaque body, as a planet, where the direct light from the source of illumination is completely cut off.
Penumbra
the partial or imperfect shadow outside the complete shadow of an opaque body, as a planet, where the light from the source of illumination is only partly cut off.
Waxing moon
the moon at any time after the new moon and before the full moon, so called because its illuminated area is increasing.
Waning moon
the moon at any time after the full moon and before the new moon, so called because its illuminated area is decreasing.
Gibbous
convex at both edges, as the moon when more than half full.

the figure of the moon in its first or last quarter, resembling a segment of a ring tapering to points at the ends.
New moon
the moon either when in conjunction with the sun or soon after, being either invisible or visible only as a slender crescent.
Full moon
the moon when the whole of its disk is illuminated, occurring when in opposition to the sun
Regolith
the layer of loose material covering the bedrock of the earth and moon, etc, comprising soil, sand, rock fragments, volcanic ash, glacial drift, etc
Crater
Also called impact crater;. Also called meteorite crater. a large bowl-shaped depression on the surface of the earth or other heavenly body, formed by the impact of a meteorite.
Maria
a large, level basalt plain on the surface of the moon, appearing dark by contrast with highland areas.
Meteoroid
any of the small bodies, often remnants of comets, traveling through space: when such a body enters the earth's atmosphere it is heated to luminosity and becomes a meteor.
