what is a correlation?
a statistical measure that calculates the strength and direction of a relationship between two variables- NO IV OR DV
how are variables referred to in a correlation?
variable 1 and variable 2
what is not mentioned when describing a correlation?
difference or effect ONLY relationships
what is a positive correlation?
where one variable variable increases so does the other one but not necessarily at the same rate
what is a negative correlation?
where one variable increases the other variable decreases but not necessarily at the same time
what is meant by no correlation?
no relationship between the two variables
how does a positive correlation look like on a graph?
it has an upward sloping line and the points on the graph will move upwards to the right
how does a negative correlation look like on a graph?
it has a downward sloping line and the points on the graph will move downwards to the right
how does negative correlation look like on a graph?
it has no clear pattern or relationship and the points on the graph will be scattered randomly
what is a correlational coefficient?
tells us the strength and direction of a relationship
what numbers does the correlation coefficient range from?
-1 to 1: zero meaning no correlation and the closer to 1 or -1 the stronger the correlation
how is the correlation coefficient generated?
through using the spearman’s rank inferential stats test
