The dynamic contextual process, conscious or unconscious, of using symbols to share meaning with others.
Model
The function of how communication works
Linear Communication
One-way communication that has no feedback. EX: A political leader talking to there people.
Spiral of Silence
the process by which a majority opinion becomes exaggerated because minorities do not feel comfortable speaking out in opposition.
noise
anything that interferes with, distorts, or slows down the transmission of information.
External Noise
physical sounds that interfere with communication. Ex: Traffic or phone static.
Internal noise
thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations that interfere with listening. EX: Tiredness
Semantic noise
distractions aroused by certain symbols that take our attention away from the main message. EX: Someone talking in a language you don't understand
sender and receiver
the person who sends a message to someone who is receives the message.
feedback loop
allows the receiver to communicate with the sender and thereby informs the sender whether the message was received and understood properly
Context
The circumstances, atmosphere, attitudes, and events surrounding a text. Background information that helps us understand the message better.
Social construct
An idea that has been created and accepted by the people in a society
interpersonal communication
direct, face-to-face communication between two or more people
Intarpersonal communication
self talk, thinking thoughts and not outwardly verbalizing them
