two subsystems of the nervous system
Central Nervous System (CNS) and Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
What is the CNS made up of?
brain and spinal cord
What is the centre of all conscious awareness?
The brain
What is the brains outer layer called?
cerebral cortex
How thick is the cerebral cortex?
About 3mm thick
Function of spinal cord
The spinal cord is an extension of the brain. It passes messages to and from the brain and connects nerves to the PNS. it is also responsible for refiex actions such as pulling your hand away from a hot plate.
What happens during fight or flight?
During the fight or flight response, the body reacts to a perceived threat by activating the sympathetic nervous system. This leads to the release of adrenaline from the adrenal medulla. As a result, heart rate increases, breathing becomes faster, and blood is directed away from non-essential functions like digestion to muscles. These changes prepare the body to either confront (fight) or escape (flight) the danger.
