Academic writing
Writing done in academia for educational purposes. presents academic research, arguments, analysis, and information in a clear and structured way. No form of emotion is used
what are the 4 types of academic writing:
Descriptive, analytical, persuasive, and critica
Purpose
The design/ intension of allowing something to occur (Intention of writing something)
Objective
HOW to achieve your goal
What is the purpose and objective of academic writing?
Is to demonstrate higher-level thinking on a topic, concept and/or idea to show understanding and prove learning on a topic, concept or idea; to make connections using your critical thinking
Types of thinking in a higher level:
Analyse: breaking down information to major idea and concepts
Synthesis: Making connections after analysing
Balanced thinking: Counter argument; can you identify the different thoughts opinions.
Multiple perspectives: Different options or different influences
Application: can you use your knowledge and understanding
Critical thinking: Can you “think about the thinking” can you evaluate and judge the quality of an argument, information and conclusion and or thought process
Creative thinking: can you use your understanding to form new connections and generate new ideas
Expository writing
is a structured form of writing that aims to explain, inform or describe a topic clearly and logically without personal opinion or emotions
goal —> to educate the reader on a specific topic and focuses on just presenting
Summary
Summary of topic, major ideas and concepts
Cause and effect
Reasons and triggers that cause a reaction, consequence, or outcome
Problem and solution
identifying a problem, issue, dispute or concern and considering alternatives (resoutions)

Similarities and differences

Persuasive writing
Convincing and persuading your audience to agree with your argument
Process writing
Designed to help reader undersant how a change takes place over time, thorugh a series of stages

A formal document that outlines research giving the purpose and objective of your research (what and why). Organises the ideas of your research making a ‘plan’

Initial stage of a research project that involves background reading to understand a topic, determine its viability, and narrow its focus
